*** GARBAGE v1.2 *** HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS: Garbage requires at least 640 X 350 EGA Monitor, and 256K RAM. DESCRIPTION: Garbage is an arcade-type game, suitable for any age, for one player. It involves both chance and skill in order to gain good scores. INSTRUCTIONS: Garbage is a 'simple' game to play, but not as easy as it may at first appear to get high scores. In this game you are a garbage-man. Your job, which is normally a six day week, is to throw garbage into the appropriate cans. There are five cans at the bottom of the screen, and above each is a number repre- senting the point value of each one. These numbers change each 'day'. Each day you will have 5 pieces of garbage to deposit. As the game begins, a piece of garbage will zoom back and forth near the top of your screen. To throw it, when you think it is in a good position, press the Space-Bar. It will then 'fall' from that position downward, BUT there is the WIND to consider as well. Rarely will the garbage fall straight, and the wobble will vary unpredictably, making it more difficult to get a direct hit in the can. When a piece DOES land COMPLETELY in a can, the point value for that can is added to your score, and a corresponding tone will sound depending on the can position, or if you miss, a lower tone will sound. If, on any 'day' you succeed in getting all five pieces of garbage each in a different can, another alarm will sound and you will be given an extra day (Overtime), in which to complete your clean-up. Note that if two pieces end up EXACTLY on top of each other when they stop, they may become invisible. This will have no effect on your score or the game. The game ends when you have no days left and have thrown the last piece on the last day. When the game ends, you will be given the option to [R]eplay or to [E]nd. If you choose to replay, your score will not be saved, if you choose [E]nd, your score (if it is in the top 10 on record) will be saved to disk. If you wish to reset all scores recorded, delete the file 'GARB.DAT'. OPTIONS: During the game, while waiting to 'throw' you have the following options: Press 'S' to toggle sound effects on/off. Press [ESC] key to end game (no score saved if ended this way). This program was written on a 19Mhz 386SX computer. It has also been tested on a slower system and seemed to work fine. Since there are now much faster systems in use, we have added an option to slow the program down. This can be done as follows: When starting program, instead of typing 'GARBAGE [ENTER]', add a command-line argument depending on how much slower you want the program to run. (some experimenting may be needed). The available arguments are: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. The HIGHER the number, the SLOWER the program will run. For example to run in the next slower mode to normal, start the program by typing 'GARBAGE 2 [ENTER]'. To use slower modes, replace the '2' in the example with any number up to 9. (Entering 1 will do nothing since that is the 'normal' speed.)
